What is Wellness?
Wellness results from the establishment and maintenance of optimum health and balance or homeostasis. Wellness is a state of being healthy, characterized by positive emotion, thought and action. Wellness is inherent in everyone, no matter what dis-ease(s) an individual might experience. If wellness is truly recognized and nurtured within that individual, he/she will more quickly heal, as compared to their healing with direct treatment of the dis-ease alone. Over 250,000 Americans are killed each year by physician induced causes including: · 106,000 die from the adverse effects of medication, · 80,000 die from infections they got while in hospital, · 20,000 die from other hospital errors, · 12,000 die from unnecessary surgeries, and · 7,000 die from medication errors in hospital. (JAMA, 7/00) Americans use twice as many drugs as do Canadians and Europeans. (CBS News 6/21/00) Health care (really disease care) has been described as the most successful failing business in America. (Holford, 1999)
